Qurbani: Lessons of Sacrifice

Sacrifice has been practiced since ancient times. It has a lot of greatness and significance. The word qurbani means sacrifice or renunciation. Basically, Eid-ul-Azha is about sacrificing the bestiality of one’s heart through animal sacrifice and accepting sacrifice to gain the pleasure of Allah.
This is a good worship and obligation. And the Prophet (PBUH) said in a hadeeth, “There is nothing dearer to Allah than shedding blood on the Day of Sacrifice. That person will appear on the Day of Resurrection with the horns, hooves and hairs of the sacrificial animal. Before the blood of the sacrifice falls to the ground, it reaches a special place in the sight of Allah. Therefore purify yourselves by the stream of sacrifice (Tirmidhi); The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said that he who did not make a sacrifice in spite of his ability should not come near our Eidgah ”(Ibn Majah).
The practice of sacrificing one’s son Ismail (A.S.) by the Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) is the beginning of the current sacrifice. The life of the Muslim nation is like a sacrifice in the Islamic Sharia. This can be a sacrifice – of life, property, wealth, time, interest, ability, will and animal slaughter. Sacrifice is the glory of selfishness, wealth and self-sacrifice for the sake of Allah. The great day of the historical sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) teaches that true love is not in wealth, not in suffering but in sacrifice. The real happiness is in giving up what others have. Eid-ul-Azha does not mean merely killing animals but a pledge of sacrifice. Allah accepts the sacrifices of the pious. The purpose of sacrifice is to surrender to Allah. Animal sacrifice is a symbol of self-sacrifice. The slaughter of sacrificial animals is really symbolic. Allah Himself has said that nothing of the flesh, skin or blood of an animal reaches him. Only taqwa and abstinence of the servant arrives. Not only animals, but also animal sacrifices have to be made. Inside every human being there is a ferocious animal called Ammara in the nafs, which constantly incites people to do wrong and sinful deeds and turns the soul into a sinful soul. Animalism is the unclean soul, that is, the sinful soul. The human soul is full of sin, the collective name of which is bestiality. First of all, after sacrificing this sinful soul, that is, bestiality, the animal should be sacrificed. It is known from history that this custom was introduced through the sacrifice of two children of Hazrat Adam (A.S.), the original father of the human race. Allah says in Quran:

وَطْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ابَدَامَ بِالْحَقِّ ِْذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِن أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبُ
“When they offered some sacrifices out of fear, the offerings of one of them were accepted and not of the other.” (Surat al-Ma’ida: 27) Then all the Prophets were commanded to sacrifice. The last sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.) was the best sacrifice in human history. Which was so pleasing to Allah that He made sacrifice obligatory for the able-bodied of the whole human race. This teaching reminds us of the religious and moral values and great ideals in the Muslim family. Hajj and Qurbani ceremonies are meant to inspire the Muslim nation with these values.
In the Qur’an, Allah Ta’ala says, “Their flesh and blood never reach Allah, but your taqwa reaches them” (Surah Al-Hajj: 38). This line of sacrifice bears the sacred memory of the incomparable devotion and wonderful sacrifice of the Prophets Ibrahim (A.S.) and Ismail (A.S.).
The real sign of Allah’s love Allah Ta’ala says, “Surely my prayers, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah Ta’ala, the Lord of the whole world.” (Surah An-Am, verse 162).
